How Much Does a Northern Lights Trip from India Actually Cost? (2026–27 Breakdown)

"How much does a Northern Lights trip actually cost from India?" is the first question almost every traveller asks us — and most websites dodge it by quoting only the package price. The honest answer is that the tour fare is roughly two-thirds of what you will really spend, once flights, visa and taxes are added. So here is the complete, no-surprises breakdown for a Lapland trip from India in the 2026–27 season, based on what our own Chasing the Lights – Scandinavia Edition (November) and Ice Breaker Special (March) departures actually cost travellers.
Short version: budget roughly ₹3.7–4.3 lakh per person all-in from India for an 8-day Finland–Sweden–Norway Northern Lights trip, depending on when you book your flights and which departure you pick. Below is exactly where that money goes.
What the tour package price covers (and what it doesn't)
Our two Lapland departures are priced per person on twin-sharing:
November — Scandinavia Edition: ₹2,59,000 per person. 8 days / 7 nights across Finland, Sweden and Norway.
March — Ice Breaker Special: ₹2,99,000 per person. Same 8 days / 7 nights, plus the polar icebreaker cruise and ice-floating that can only run in deep winter.
That package price is genuinely inclusive of the expensive on-ground parts, which is where package tours save you money versus booking independently. It covers:
All 4-star hotel accommodation for 7 nights (twin-sharing), including the one-night Glass Igloo stay and the ICEHOTEL experience.
All transfers by private coach with a driver, plus every entry fee and city tour in the itinerary.
4 Northern Lights hunts (Rovaniemi, Kiruna and two in Tromsø) — the single most important thing you are paying for.
Marquee experiences: husky safari, reindeer sleigh ride, Abisko Sky Station cable car, Arctic fjord & whale cruise in Tromsø, Santa Claus Village and more.
Daily breakfast, daily tips for guide and driver, and a refillable copper water bottle.
March only: travel insurance and an e-SIM are already bundled in, plus the 3-hour icebreaker cruise.
What the package price does not include — and what trips up most first-time budgeters — is international flights, your Schengen visa, taxes (GST and TCS), lunches and dinners, and personal spending. Those are the costs we break down next.
The full cost breakdown, line by line
1. International flights: ₹55,000 – ₹95,000
Flights from India to Lapland are not included in either package, and they are the biggest variable in your budget. A return economy ticket from Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru to Helsinki (your Finland gateway) typically runs ₹55,000–₹75,000 if you book 3–4 months ahead, and ₹85,000–₹95,000+ if you book late or travel over peak Christmas/New-Year dates. Booking early is the single most effective way to cut your total trip cost.
2. Schengen visa: ₹9,000 – ₹12,000
You will apply for a Finland (Schengen) short-stay visa, since Finland is your country of entry. Budget roughly the €90 visa fee (about ₹8,100) plus VFS Global service and courier charges, which brings it to around ₹9,000–₹12,000 per person. On the March Ice Breaker departure, note that visa and appointment charges are explicitly excluded, so plan for this separately. Our team guides you through the documentation either way — see our broader notes on visa documents for Finland if you are applying for the first time.
3. Travel insurance: ₹0 – ₹3,500
Schengen rules require travel insurance with at least €30,000 medical cover. On the March departure this is already included. On the November departure you will need to buy your own — a suitable Europe policy for an 8-day trip costs roughly ₹2,000–₹3,500 per person.
4. GST and TCS on the package
Indian tour packages for overseas travel attract GST (currently 5% on the package) plus TCS (Tax Collected at Source) on overseas tour packages as per current rules. On a ₹2.59–2.99 lakh package the GST works out to roughly ₹13,000–₹15,000. The important thing to know about TCS is that it is not a lost cost — it is adjustable against your income-tax liability when you file your return, so you effectively get it back. We show the exact GST and TCS on your invoice before you pay.
5. Meals beyond breakfast: ₹18,000 – ₹30,000
Daily breakfast is included, so you are budgeting for lunches and dinners across 7 days. Nordic restaurant meals are not cheap — expect ₹1,500–₹2,500 per main meal. Indian vegetarian and Jain travellers can cut this significantly by carrying staples and self-catering some evenings; we explain exactly how in our guide to vegetarian and Jain food on a Northern Lights trip.
6. Personal spending & optional extras: ₹10,000 – ₹25,000
This covers souvenirs, snacks, any optional activities outside the itinerary, a SIM/data plan if you are on the November trip (the March trip includes an e-SIM), and a buffer for warm-clothing rental or purchases if you don't already own proper Arctic gear.
Realistic all-in cost from India
Putting it together, here is what a single traveller should actually budget, per person on twin-sharing:
November (Scandinavia Edition): ₹2,59,000 package + ~₹70,000 flights + ~₹10,000 visa + ~₹3,000 insurance + ~₹14,000 GST + ~₹25,000 meals & personal = roughly ₹3,80,000 all-in (before TCS, which is adjustable against your taxes).
March (Ice Breaker Special): ₹2,99,000 package (insurance + e-SIM already included) + ~₹70,000 flights + ~₹10,000 visa + ~₹15,000 GST + ~₹25,000 meals & personal = roughly ₹4,20,000 all-in (before TCS).
Book your flights early and self-cater some meals and you can comfortably land at the lower end of these ranges. Travel over peak holiday dates or book flights late and you'll sit at the higher end.
Why a group package usually works out cheaper than going solo
It is tempting to assume that booking everything yourself is cheaper, but for a multi-country Arctic trip the opposite is usually true. The 4-star hotels, the Glass Igloo and ICEHOTEL nights, the husky and reindeer experiences, the Abisko cable car and the Tromsø fjord cruise are all booked at group rates you cannot match as an individual — and in peak aurora season many of these sell out months ahead. On top of that, our aurora hunts are run with local guides who chase clear skies across three countries, which is what takes your odds of actually seeing the lights from "maybe" to "very likely" across 4 attempts. You are paying for the logistics being solved, not just the beds.
How to keep your Northern Lights trip cost down
Book flights 3–4 months out — this alone can save ₹20,000–₹30,000 per person.
Lock your tour deposit early (₹25,900 for November, ₹29,900 for March) to hold the group price before seasonal increases.
Travel twin-sharing rather than requesting a single-occupancy room.
Self-cater some dinners, especially if you are vegetarian or Jain — see our food guide.
Already own thermals and a heavy jacket? Bring them rather than renting Arctic gear on arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a Northern Lights trip from India cost in total?
Budget roughly ₹3.7–4.3 lakh per person all-in for an 8-day Finland–Sweden–Norway trip. That's the tour package (₹2.59–2.99 lakh) plus international flights (~₹55,000–95,000), Schengen visa (~₹9,000–12,000), GST, and meals/personal spending. Booking flights early keeps you at the lower end.
Are flights included in the Northern Lights tour package?
No. International flights from India to Helsinki are not included in either our November or March departure, and are the biggest variable in your budget. Booking 3–4 months ahead typically saves ₹20,000–30,000 per person.
Is travel insurance included, and do I need a visa?
Travel insurance and an e-SIM are included on the March Ice Breaker departure but not on November (budget ~₹2,000–3,500 to buy your own). Both trips require a Finland Schengen short-stay visa (~₹9,000–12,000), which we help you apply for.
Is TCS on the tour package a lost cost?
No. TCS (Tax Collected at Source) on overseas tour packages is adjustable against your income-tax liability when you file your return, so you effectively get it back. GST on the package is a normal 5%.
