Northern Thailand saves its best for the end of the year. This seven-day journey opens in Chiang Rai, where three extraordinary temples sit within an hour of each other — the glittering white Wat Rong Khun, the indigo-and-gold Blue Temple, and the deliberately dark Baan Dam. From there the route climbs into tea country at Chui Fong, crosses the royal gardens of Doi Tung, and reaches the Mekong at the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet across the water. The road south to Chiang Mai is broken by hot springs and an umbrella-painting workshop, arriving in time for Doi Suthep at sunset and the monks’ evening chanting. Then comes New Year’s Eve: a khom loi lantern in your hands, a wish, and a sky filling with thousands of lights. The final day belongs to elephants and a slow bamboo raft downriver, before one last quiet temple at Wat Ban Den.
