Will I actually see the Northern Lights?

Accepted Answer

Nobody can promise it — the aurora is a natural phenomenon, and clear skies and solar activity decide each night. What this itinerary does is improve the odds: two separate chases on different nights, in two different countries, plus a glass-igloo night where you can keep watching from bed. Abisko in particular sits in a rain shadow that gives it some of the clearest winter skies in the Arctic.

Why early March — isn’t it too late in the season?

It’s one of the better windows. You still get long dark nights for the aurora, but roughly 10–11 hours of daylight for the sightseeing, rather than the four or five hours you’d have in December. Activity around the spring equinox also tends to be strong.

How cold does it actually get?

Expect −10°C to −25°C in Lapland. Stockholm and Helsinki are much milder, around −5°C to +3°C. The swing between the two ends of the trip is significant, so pack for both.

What do I need to pack?

Thermal base layers, a warm mid-layer, a windproof down jacket, insulated waterproof boots, a wool cap, a neck warmer and two pairs of gloves. One practical tip: keep your phone and camera batteries in an inner pocket close to your body — the cold drains them remarkably fast.

What happens if the weather closes the Abisko chairlift?

Accepted Answer

The evening moves to a heated lavvu — a traditional Sámi tent — in the national park, with warm drinks and local food, followed by aurora watching from there. Note that no refund is given when weather stops the lift, as this is outside the operator’s control.

What are the overnight trains like?

Accepted Answer

Both are sleeper compartments rather than seats — Stockholm to Luleå with SJ (around 14 hours), and Oulu to Helsinki with VR (around 11 hours). Pack a small overnight bag with what you need for the night so your main luggage can stay closed. Exact times are confirmed on your e-tickets.

Is the ice floating compulsory?

Accepted Answer

No. It’s an optional part of the icebreaker cruise, typically 15–30 minutes. The survival suit keeps you buoyant and insulated, so you float rather than swim, but you’re free to stay aboard and watch instead. Icebreaker departure times shift with ice and weather, and final timings come through on your voucher.

Do I need separate visas for three countries?

Accepted Answer

No. Sweden, Finland and Estonia are all in the Schengen area, so a single valid Schengen visa covers the whole trip. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your return date.

Question 9

Will I need cash, and which currency?

Accepted Answer

Sweden uses the Swedish krona (SEK); Finland and Estonia use the Euro (EUR). Cards are accepted almost everywhere across all three countries, so large amounts of cash aren’t necessary.

Question 10

Is there a time change during the trip?

Accepted Answer

Yes — Finland and Estonia are one hour ahead of Sweden. The shift happens on Day 4 when you cross from Kiruna into Rovaniemi, so factor it into arrival times and the first Finnish morning.
